Black Retriever

Born in Liverpool, Ansdell worked as a portrait painter but became known for his animal portraits. Wealthy Victorian industrialists commissioned paintings of their favourite pets that captured the character of their furry friends rather than showing off anatomical accuracy.

This snapshot framing a Tweed Water Spaniel mid-walk with an informal background conveys an immediate and intimate feel.
