Tom Derry, Jester to Anne of Denmark

This Flemish artist was famed for the level of realism in portrait painting, closely observing the sitter and, for the very first time in Britain, painting in three dimensions using tone and shadow.

Unusually for a court painting the sitter here is a servant, Tom Derry, Queen Anne’s well- loved ‘fool’.
