The Napoleonic wars ended in 1815 and Turner was able to travel abroad again, painting this watercolour in Germany.

Turner was known for breaking the rules and often used oil techniques on a watercolour and vice versa.   Here he used the ‘scratching out’ method to create the effect of the rising chimney smoke.
