Waiting for the Shop to Open

This image, painted during wartime, shows people queueing for rations outside a greengrocer’s in Salford.  The number 177 above the door refer to Lowry's own Pendelbury home.

Using his palette of only five colours, Lowry creates perspective by contrasting strong foreground colours with faint two-dimensional buildings in the distance.
