The Struggle for Existence

Battles between animals have been a common theme in  art but took on new meaning in the C19th after Darwin. 

In this painting Goddard reacts to Darwin’s 1859 claim that there was a continual ’struggle for existence’ in nature by conveying real respect for the fierce power of wild animals.
