The plight of children was a common theme in Victorian art.  Here working street children spot a poster for a traditional Christmas show, their once smart clothes, now torn, indicate they’ve fallen on hard times.

Charles Dickens, was an advocate of entertainment for the working-classes, and for working kids for whom these pleasures were usually denied.
